| Title: | Jackie Kennedy Cover | |
| Date/Era/Period: | June 1962 | |
| Description: | A World's Fair cacheted cover signed by Jackie Kennedy, as First Lady. | |
| Grade: | Mint/New/Uncirculated | |
| Condition: | This cover is in absolutely mint condition. There is no stains, creases, folds, or any other imperfection. There is also no discolorations to this cover. I am familiar with cover condition as I am a collector of First Day Covers. | |
| Origin: | I purchased this from a dealer who obtained a collection of Kennedy collectibles from a Mrs. Sam Stein of Stoughton, MA. | |
| Provenance: | The aforementioned Mr. Stein was somehow involved in politicis and mailed Jackie (on several occassions) a letter and covers requesting her signature on the covers. The attached letter was sent back to Mr. Stein from Jackie's secretary, indicating that Jackie signed the covers. The attached cover was the one with the best condition of the two. The timeframe of both the letter and the cover's postmark indicate Jackie was First Lady at the time. | |

| History Of The Item: | First Lady Jacqueline B. Kennedy signed FDC (Seattle Worlds Fair commemorative stamp) dated May 8th, 1962. Accompanied by a letter from the White House Social Secretary dated June 8th, 1962. Mrs. Kennedy was First Lady when this item was signed. The original owner was Mr. Samuel Stein. We were unable to find any information on Mr. Stein other than that provided by the current owner. Jacqueline Lee Bouvier was born in 1929 in Southampton, New York. Her father, John Vernou Bouvier III, was an affluent Wall Street stockbroker whose ancestors had arrived from France in the early 1800s. Her mother, Janet Lee Bouvier, an accomplished equestrian, was of Irish and English parentage. Jackie spent her childhood in New York City and Long Island and later, following her mother's divorce in 1940 and remarriage to Hugh D. Auchincloss II in 1942, in McLean, Virginia and Newport, Rhode Island. Her favorite pastimes were reading, sketching, writing poems and riding horses. At age 31 Jacqueline Kennedy had become the third youngest First Lady in our history and the first to be the mother of an infant since the turn of the century. Jacqueline Kennedy quickly stepped into her new role. Her first major project was the historical restoration of the White House. She created a White House Fine Arts Committee to guide and authenticate the work, created the post of White House curator, oversaw publication of a guidebook for visitors, established the White House Library and the Rose Garden, and promoted legislation to raise the presidential mansion to museum status. Sale of the guidebook provided funds for the project; within six months of publication, 350,000 copies were sold. The book, "The White House: An Historic Guide", continues to support the work of the White House Historical Association which she founded. On November 22, 1963 John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas and Jacqueline Kennedy became a widow at age 34. She planned the President's State Funeral, which was watched by millions around the world who shared her grief and admired her courage and dignity. |
